The Growth Mindset: Chapter 9

 Increasing Engagement 

      Engagement in the classroom is a crucial part of the learning process. If a child is not engaged in the classroom I would say it’s safe to say they aren’t learning as much as they should be. Sitting through a 50 min lecture is something I don’t even enjoy let alone someone younger with a low attention span. 

      Keeping a 1st grade class engaged in my opinion is a lot easier than keeping high schoolers engaged. It is our job as teachers to find new and creative ways to keep students actively engaged and want to come to class and learn. 

      There are ways stated in the book that help keep kids engaged and want to learn such as opportunities for team work, leadership roles, values of American culture, and making class something they want to come to not something they are “required” to go to. 

      You also have to be a teacher that enjoys teaching. Students can see how you act and how you feel about teaching and the effort put into your lessons. When they see that you don’t care then they won’t care either. You have to be just as engaged as you expect your students to be if you want them to enjoy learning and expect a good outcome of the lesson.

 A Happy Collaborative Classroom      The classroom environment plays a huge role in kids learning. A kid is more likely to learn and engage more in an open and fun creative environment rather than a bland and boring room with regular desks and seating. The Growth Mindset: Chapter 10

 Moonshots      Have you ever had a teacher that went above and beyond for your education? A teacher who spent a lot of time creating fun activities, games, assignments, etc. How about a student who dreamed big about everything he wanted to accomplish?     In order to have a growth mindset we have to shoot for the moon. We have to dream big and want these huge accomplishments to strive for and achieve. If we only try and achieve these basic ordinary things then our students will do the same thing. If we want our students to work hard and dream big and accomplish great things then we have to be that example for them.      It is very important for our students and us to take these Moonshot thinking and ideas. And they need a blueprint to think this way. An example from the book is the X formula. Find a huge problem, find a radical solution, and make breakthrough technology. The Growth Mindset Chapter 1

 The Best We Can Be           I found many things I read in this chapter to be interesting, but a few really stood out to me. At the beginning of chapter one, it starts off talking about losing hope. the crisis we face today is that forty percent of students in school don't think they have a great future ahead of them. Which is also considered to be a "fixed" mindset. Along with that, only thirty-three percent of students felt they had a mentor who encouraged them. whether that's a parent, counselor, teacher, or coach. That leaves an astonishing seventy-seven percent of students who feel like they have no one in their lives to help them grow and motivate them which I find really sad. I think the education program needs to do a better job of showing kids we can help them and be there for them to grow.
