The Growth Mindset: Chapter 7

 The Human Connection 

    Human connection plays one of the biggest roles in how we connect and learn as humans.  Empathy plays a huge role in that as well. What is empathy? Empathy is the ability to understand and identify with the feelings and emotions of others. Empathy is recognizing other's emotions and communicating with them. Empathy is a choice and a very vulnerable one. As a teacher, we need to recognize when we need to help a student solve the problem and when we just need to listen and be there for them.  

    We as educators also have to have a good understanding of the difference between empathy and sympathy. It is important to have unconditional positive regard for your students as a teacher. Your students need to know that they are valued and loved in order to help them learn and grow. I believe that if you are not empathetic with your students you will never grow a connection with them, if you don't connect with your students you will not be able to help them learn and grow in the necessary ways they need to be successful.

 A Happy Collaborative Classroom      The classroom environment plays a huge role in kids learning. A kid is more likely to learn and engage more in an open and fun creative environment rather than a bland and boring room with regular desks and seating. The Growth Mindset: Chapter 10

 Moonshots      Have you ever had a teacher that went above and beyond for your education? A teacher who spent a lot of time creating fun activities, games, assignments, etc. How about a student who dreamed big about everything he wanted to accomplish?     In order to have a growth mindset we have to shoot for the moon. We have to dream big and want these huge accomplishments to strive for and achieve. If we only try and achieve these basic ordinary things then our students will do the same thing. If we want our students to work hard and dream big and accomplish great things then we have to be that example for them.      It is very important for our students and us to take these Moonshot thinking and ideas. And they need a blueprint to think this way. An example from the book is the X formula. Find a huge problem, find a radical solution, and make breakthrough technology. The Growth Mindset Chapter 1

 The Best We Can Be           I found many things I read in this chapter to be interesting, but a few really stood out to me. At the beginning of chapter one, it starts off talking about losing hope. the crisis we face today is that forty percent of students in school don't think they have a great future ahead of them. Which is also considered to be a "fixed" mindset. Along with that, only thirty-three percent of students felt they had a mentor who encouraged them. whether that's a parent, counselor, teacher, or coach. That leaves an astonishing seventy-seven percent of students who feel like they have no one in their lives to help them grow and motivate them which I find really sad. I think the education program needs to do a better job of showing kids we can help them and be there for them to grow.
