The Growth Mindset Chapter 2
Building Positive Relationships
When it comes to being a teacher, coach, professor, boss, or leader, I believe that the relationship you have with that person affects how well they will understand and learn what you are trying to teach them. Not only should your students respect you and listen but you should also treat them with the same respect and listen to them as well. I have coached countless kids at my job and they were awful. They didn't listen, messed around on equipment, distracted other students, and caused a lot of problems. Not because they were just bad kids but because they saw that I didn't connect with them or even try to and they could tell that I wasn't as fond of them as others. Which has caused them to act out even more because they saw they could get a reaction out of me. The main thing that helped me with those kids was the simplest solution ever. Just talk to them, Something as simple as talking to them about their day, what they were doing later, and just building a small relationship with them completely changed how they behaved in class.
I think having a relationship with each kid is very important in how they learn. Throughout that relationship you learn a lot about them their lives and how they learn. Knowing that tremendously helps you in knowing how to help them learn better. I personally have a student I coach and every time he comes to class we each come up with a fun and creative name to call each other for that day. Such as " Smokey the Bear, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, etc... not only does that build a connection between us and help us bond and work better together, but it also gets him to want to come to class and learn more because he looks forward to our names every week.
