The Growth Mindset: Chapter 4

Mission Metacognition     Think back to when you were in school, have you ever heard your teacher question you or a classmate as to why you can't solve a problem? I know I can. Now, what is Metacognition?  Metacognition is often defined as " thinking about thinking" In my own words I would say it is thinking about better ways to think, learn, or comprehend. It breaks down thinking and learning into implementing strategies and evaluating outcomes. Which they can also use later in life with any type of problem-solving.  So, not only is it a good skill to develop in school to help with learning, but it is also a skill that will help you through life after school. Think about all the strategies you use to study or learn. Do you take notes in class? Just sit and listen, do you highlight things in your book?, Do you make note cards to study for a test? what works best for you? Metacognition is something you may already be doing. You already know the best learnin...

The Growth Mindset: Chapter 3

Brain Training      "The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice." ( Herbert) Throughout this chapter, it dives into the topic of the brain and its ability to learn and grow. The brain is just like another other muscle in the body. If you want bigger biceps you lift weights and do curls over and over, if you want a big chest you do a lot of bench press, if you want to become smarter or learn more, you study read books, and find ways to grow and strengthen your mind.  The brain also works like a muscle in the form of muscle memory. Once you do something over and over you never forget how to do that certain thing, the brain works the exact same way. You have the capability to be smart and do all these other things you think you can't, the only thing holding you back is your mind. It is always good to continue growing your mind and finding ways to challenge your mind to learn and grow.

The Growth Mindset Chapter 2

Building Positive Relationships      When it comes to being a teacher, coach, professor, boss, or leader, I believe that the relationship you have with that person affects how well they will understand and learn what you are trying to teach them.  Not only should your students respect you and listen but you should also treat them with the same respect and listen to them as well.  I have coached countless kids at my job and they were awful. They didn't listen, messed around on equipment, distracted other students, and caused a lot of problems. Not because they were just bad kids but because they saw that I didn't connect with them or even try to and they could tell that I wasn't as fond of them as others. Which has caused them to act out even more because they saw they could get a reaction out of me. The main thing that helped me with those kids was the simplest solution ever. Just talk to them, Something as simple as talking to them about their day, w...

The Growth Mindset Chapter 1

The Best We Can Be           I found many things I read in this chapter to be interesting, but a few really stood out to me. At the beginning of chapter one, it starts off talking about losing hope. the crisis we face today is that forty percent of students in school don't think they have a great future ahead of them. Which is also considered to be a "fixed" mindset. Along with that, only thirty-three percent of students felt they had a mentor who encouraged them. whether that's a parent, counselor, teacher, or coach. That leaves an astonishing seventy-seven percent of students who feel like they have no one in their lives to help them grow and motivate them which I find really sad. I think the education program needs to do a better job of showing kids we can help them and be there for them to grow. I feel today kids don't trust teachers today or they are just too scared to ask for help.           I do believe that e...
